"Dive into the history, science, and mystery of North Carolina's infamously treacherous coastline, aptly named the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Since the time of Blackbeard, primary documents reveal that more than two thousand vessels have sunk beneath its waves. Journey through the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum as we try to solve mysteries such as the disappearance, 140 years ago, of the U.S. Navy's first submarine, the green USS Alligator. Explore the historic lighthouses of Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke to determine their importance in lifesaving efforts. Work in teams to design, construct, and test-drive Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)..."
-- Partial descriptor of the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" Seminar from the NCCAT Brochure

In August of this year, I attended the NCCAT Seminar titled "Graveyard of the Atlantic". The following pages include pictures I took during that seminar, as well as some of the stories and legends I learned there. This was my first visit to North Carolina's "Outer Banks", and I can't think of a better introduction to their history than attending this seminar.

This was also my first NCCAT (North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching) Seminar, and I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful experience that was. This is an organization that truly appreciates teachers, and the facilitators do everything to make the seminar enjoyable, educational, and unforgettable. If you are a NC teacher and have never attended an NCCAT seminar, I strongly suggest you do! With campuses in the Western part of NC (Cullowhee) and the Eastern part of NC (Ocracoke), you should be able to find a subject and an environment that suits you (and no, I don't work for NCCAT, nor am I getting any type of kickback for talking about them -- they're just great)!
